Mission

Our research goal is to study materials and mechanics to tackle various engineering problems encountered as a result of material failure, as well as to design enabling materials so that the most advanced concepts in technology can be realized. The emphasis is given to gain a basic understanding of microstructures and properties of materials and their relationships. Particularly, we have been involved with novel processing science and techniques, microstructure design and characterization, structure-property relationships of thin films/coatings, and mechanical behavior of materials at different length scales. Current and future efforts encompass the use of (micro)mechanics, computer simulation and modeling, and high-resolution and analytical characterization techniques for applications such as microelectronics, MEMS, flexible devices, and renewable/alternative energy fields. Ceramics and metals have been the core material of our research, but it is also recently extending into polymers and hybrids/composites fields.
